City Plans for Spring 2012 Student Move-Out

April 24, 2012

This year, there are three ways students can get rid of their unwanted items and trash.

MORGANTOWN – The City of Morgantown is collaborating with local entities to prepare for the WVU Student Move Out, May 3, 2012 through May 12, 2012.

This time each year, the City prepares for the mass evacuation of WVU students from their apartments and houses back to their hometowns.  This creates a much heavier workload for Allied Waste and Public Works as they work to get students’ unwanted items and things they can’t take home with them…where it belongs.

This year, there are several ways for students to do this.  They can put waste in Student Move-Out Dumpsters placed around town, set out their electronics for e-cycling, or donate gently used or reusable items to the WVU Blue & Gold Mine Sale.

The Student Move-Out Dumpster Program is open to WVU students who pay residential rates for their regular weekly trash pickup.  This clean up is not for students living in commercial dwellings or for landlord use.

Dumpsters will be placed in the following locations on May 3, 2012:

  • Grant Avenue
  • Beverly Avenue
  • McLane Avenue
  • Willey Street
  • Garrison Avenue
  • Brockway Avenue

They will be regularly emptied between May 3 and May 11, and then removed on May 11 and 12.

Students are asked to place all trash inside the dumpsters, and not stacked up around it, as Allied Waste says this could create an unnecessary delay in trash service.

There are restrictions on what can be thrown away in Allied Waste Dumpsters for Student Move-Out.  Carpet, tree limbs, construction materials, car parts, batteries, televisions, computers, air conditioners, refrigerators (unless tagged by a certified technician), paints, tires, and other hazardous materials will not be accepted.

If the dumpsters allocated for these areas a full, the property manager or landlord can schedule an extra pick up.  Any trash left at the residence for collection must be bagged or boxed and stacked curbside.  Violations of these guidelines are subject to a $500 fine.

Additionally, if students are looking to get rid of electronics that don’t work anymore (excluding televisions), they are welcome to set them out on the curb near their regular toter location.  The Mon County Solid Waste Authority is working with the City this year to help get these “ecyclable” materials to the proper places, because there are new regulations on what can be thrown away in landfills.  Electronics are no longer one of these items.   The City would like to extend its thanks to the SWA for helping discard these electronics this year.

If students are hesitant to thow perfectly usable items away, they are welcome to donate them to the United Way Blue & Gold Mine Sale, an annual rummage sale held to keep items out of landfills.
Donation stations, or “pods,” will be placed in these locations between April 30 &

May 16:

  • All Residence Halls
  • WVU Recreation Center
  • Seneca Center
  • Chateau Royale
  • Grant Avenue
  • Area 81 – Mountaineer Station
  • Prospect & Spruce Streets

They can also bring donations to the WVU Stadium’s East Concourse on May 12 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., where volunteers can help you unload your items directly into the sale area.

For the Blue & Gold Mine Sale, students are welcome to donate furniture, clothes, linens, bedding, rugs, lamps, desks, books, and much more, but are asking for no televisions.  (Televisions can be donated to the Ecycling Pickup mentioned above.)

The WVU Blue & Gold Mine Sale will be held May 19 from 7 a.m. to noon.  Early bird admission before 8:30 a.m. is $4.
